Albus Dumbledore uses his delluminator to capture the light from the streetlamps on Privet Drive. Professor McGonagall transforms from a cat and shortly after Hagrid arrives on his flying motorcycle and hands Harry Potter to Dumbledore and he leaves a note to Aunt Petunia Dursley and Uncle Vernon Dursley. Ten years later, Aunt Petunia bangs on the door of the cupboard under the stairs where Harry is kept and told to wake up. Dudley Dursley runs down the stairs but stops to repeatedly jump up and down on the stairs above where Harry is kept. Harry walks into the kitchen and Aunt Petunia tells Harry to cook breakfast without burning anything. Vernon counts his birthday presents and starts yelling when he notices there is one less than the year before. Before going to the zoo, Uncle Vernon warns Harry not to act up or he will not eat for a week. After Dudley bangs on the glass of the Burmese python exhibit, Harry apologizes to it and notices it seems to understand him as he talks. Dudley sees the snake moving and shoves Harry aside and Harry makes the glass disappear. Dudley falls into the snake exhibit and the Burmese python tells Harry thanks as it slithers away. The glass reappears and Uncle Vernon sees Harry laughing. A Hogwarts owl drops off a piece of mail addressed to Harry. Dudley sees Harry looking at his letter and takes it from him and gives it to Uncle Vernon who keeps it when he notices it is from Hogwarts. Day after day, more letters arrive from Hogwarts, which Uncle Vernon continues to rip up or burn. On Sunday, the Dursley house is flooded with letters from Hogwarts and Uncle Vernon decides they are going to leave. They travel to Ollivanders and Mr Ollivander helps Harry find the wand right for him. He tells Harry that the wand used by Voldemort|"He Who Must Not Be Named" carried a phoenix feather from the phoenix that shared a feather with the wand that chose Harry. Hagrid knocks on the store window and shows Harry his birthday present, Hedwig. Hagrid tells Harry the story of Voldemort and how Harry's parents Lilly Potter and James Potter stood up to Voldemort, but were eventually killed by him. Hagrid tells Harry he has to leave and hands him a ticket from London to Hogwarts by way of Platform 9 3/4. Harry asks Station Guard where Platform 9 3/4 is, but the Station Guard thinks Harry is joking and walks off. Harry hears Mrs Weasley complain about Muggles and he follows her, Ginny Weasley, Percy Weasley, Fred Weasley, George Weasley and Ron Weasley to Platform 9 3/4. Percy goes first, followed by Fred and George. Harry asks Mrs Weasley fow help and she explains how to disappear into the wall and come out at the proper platform and Ginny wishes him luck. Harry gets onto Hogwarts Express and shares a sleeper car with Ron. A Dimpled Woman on Train asks Harry and Ron if they want anything from the food trolley and when Harry notices Ron brought food, he buys everything from the trolley. Ron introduces Harry to Scabbers and before he is about to show Harry a spell, Hermione Granger asks them if they have seen Neville Longbottom's toad, Trevor. After Ron fails at a spell, Hermione uses a spell to fix Harry's broken glasses. They arrive at the station and take boats to Hogwarts. Professor McGonagall tells the first year students that they must go through the process of being sorted into their respective houses and she explains the points system and the house that wins the most points will win the house cup. Neville finds Trevor and Draco Malfoy makes a comment about Harry, which causes the other students to exclaim and introduces Harry to Crabbe and Goyle. When Ron snickers at Draco, Draco insults Ron and tells Harry some wizarding families are better than others. The first year students are brought into the Great Hall and brought to The Sorting Hat. Dumbledore tells the first year students the rules including that the Dark Forest is off limits. The first to get sorted into their house is Hermione, then Draco, Susan Bones, Ron, and Harry. While The Sorting Hat is on Harry, Harry asks it to not put him in Slytherin House and he is placed with Griffindor House. During dinner, Seamus Finnegan tells Dean Thomas and Neville that he is of mixed heritage. Harry asks Percy who Professor Snape is after Harry had earlier seen Snape staring at him. Nearly Headless Nick introduces himself to the new students and The Grey Lady, The Bloody Baron, and Fat Friar float around the students. Percy gives the password to the Fat Lady and Percy takes the first year students into the Gryfffindor common room. The next morning, Harry and Ron are late to Professor McGonagall's class. Snape introduces his class and points out that fame doesn't equal ability. Mail comes and Dean tells everyone Neville got a Remembrall. Harry reads The Daily Prophet that Ron received and sees that there was a break in at Gringotts in the same vault he and Hagrid went to. Later, Madame Hooch teaches the students how to ride their broomsticks. Neville loses control of his broomstick and eventually falls and breaks his wrist. While Madame Hooch is taking Neville to the hospital, Draco steal Neville's Remembrall. Harry flies after Draco and catches the Remembrall when Draco throws it into the air. Professor McGonagall sees Harry flying and takes him with her and introduces Harry to Oliver Wood and Harry is made the new Gryffindor Quidditch Seeker. Hermione shows Harry the trophy case and he sees that his father won a Quidditch award in 1972 as a Seeker. The staircase moves as Harry, Hermione and Ron are walking up it and as they go to leave a room they aren't supposed to be they see Mrs Norris and run away. They enter a locked room and come face to face with Fluffy who chases them out of the room. Hermione figures out that Fluffy was guarding something. Oliver explains the rules of Quidditch to Harry and shows him the Golden Snitch. |
