Barbara
Background
Barbara Maitland is married to Adam Maitland. They own the Maitland Hardware store and live in Winter River, Connecticut.

Barbara and Adam are returning to their house from town when they crash their car and plummet into the Winter River. They return to their house and realize they can't remember how they got there. Adam walks out of the house and falls into a desert world, before being pulled back into the house by Barbara. They are woken up one day by a noise and find the Deetz family consisting of Charles, Delia and Lydia, moving into their house. Delia's interior decorator Otho arrives at the house and after Barbara and Adam hear Delia and Otho talk about redecorating their house they decide to try and scare them. Their initial attempts to scare them fail and they use a portal to enter the land of the dead to ask for help. They are told by the Receptionist they only have three chances to ask for help and then Messenger gets them and tells them to go and see Juno their caseworker. Juno refuses to help them and warns them against using the help of Betelgeuse who has moved into the town model Adam had built in his attic. They try to scare the Deetz, but fail again. Lydia sees them and asks them what they are trying to do. Barbara and Adam ask Lydia to help them scare her family and she agrees. During a dinner held by Delia for her agent Bernard and including Grace, Beryl and Otho, Barbara and Adam take control of their bodies and make Delia sings the Banana Boat Song, and the other guests dance. They fail to scare them and instead inspire Delia and Charles to try and use Adam and Barbara as some sort of amusement for paying guests. In desperation Barbara calls Betelgeuse's name three times and she and Adam are transported to Adam's model. Betelgeuse makes them an offer, however neither Barbara or Adam trust him and they go back to the attic. While they are hiding from the Deetz family and Otho, Otho steals their Recently Deceased Handbook and Barbara and Adam are transported to Juno's office. Juno tells them they have one more chance to scare the Deetz out of the house and then she sends them away after making them show her how they plan on scaring them. Charles' former boss Maxie Dean and Sarah Dean are invited for dinner for a sales pitch. Otho uses the handbook to call Barbara and Adam and they are forced before the Deetz and Deans. Both Barbara and Adam start to grow old and shrink and Lydia in desperation calls out Betelgeuse three times. Barbara and Adam try and send back Betelgeuse when he tries and forces Lydia to marry him. Barbara eventually uses a Sand Snake to eat Betelgeuse, halting the wedding. Weeks later Lydia is rewarded by Barbara and Adam for making an A on her math exam, by being elevated in the air while Juno in the Line plays in the background.
