Lucius Vorenus

Background

Lucius Vorenus has been an Evocati, Prefect, Centurion and Chief of Scouts in the 13th Legion of the Roman Army. He is the husband of Niobe and the father of Vorena the Elder, Vorena the Younger and Lucius.

During the events of Rome: Season 1 Episode 1 The Stolen Eagle played by Kevin McKidd

During the final battle against the Gauls, Lucius Vorenus is forced to retrieve a drunk Titus Pullo who has broken ranks. Back at camp Lucius has Titus whipped and condemns him to die in the gladiatorial stadium. After the legions eagle standard is stolen, Mark Antony orders Lucius to retrieve the standard. In order to gather information Lucius has nearby villagers crucified, one Crucified Man tells Lucius it was Spaniards who stole the standard. Antony's Tribune goes into Titus Pullo's cell and informs him he will be joining Lucius Vorenus on the mission to retrieve the eagle standard. As they are riding Titus thanks Lucius for taking him on the mission and Lucius informs him he didn't do it as a favor, but knowing the odds of them finding the standard were low, he decided to take a condemned man along so as not to ruin the career of a good soldier. While Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo are camping Titus falls asleep during watch and their horses are stolen. They see a group of people walking while also using Gaius Octavian to pull a cart. They kill the men and find out they were the Spaniards who stole the standard. They also find Sextus amongst the group holding the standard. Sextus strikes Pullo with the standard and tries to run away but is impaled and killed by a spear thrown by Lucius. They return to camp with the standard and Octavian.

During the events of Rome: Season 1 Episode 2 How Titus Pullo Brought Down the Republic played by Kevin McKidd

Titus Pullo, Lucius Vorenus and Octavian are sent to accompany Mark Antony on his return to Rome. As they wait for Mark Antony to finish having sex with a Peasant Woman, Lucius appears nervous of returning home. Antony arrives in Rome to cheers from the people. Antony tells Lucius and Titus to return Octavian to his mother Atia of the Julii. Castor announces to Atia, Octavian is home. Octavian introduces Lucius and Titus and insists they be allowed to stay for dinner. During dinner there is a discussion about politics where Lucius argues the preservation of the Republic is the most important factor while Titus thinks Caesar should ride into Rome and take over. Lucius and Titus awkwardly part ways and Lucius returns home. He finds Niobe in the market with Clarissa, holding a child which he assumes is her illegitimate child. Niobe tells Lucius the child is his grandson also named Lucius from his daughter Vorena the Elder and a boy named Crito. Lucius walks into the house and is introduced to his daughters Vorena the Older and Vorena the Younger. Things continue to be tense at Lucius and Niobe's house. Lucius finds out he was reported dead and his pay stopped so Niobe had to borrow money from her sister. After he is wounded in the bar fight, Titus barges into Lucius' house and collapses. A Doctor arrives and cuts open Titus' skull to relieve pressure. Lucius visits the slave market where a Slave Trader is selling off slaves. Otho approaches Lucius and convinces him to spend money on feeding his slaves so they will bring a better price. Lucius is called to guard Mark Antony when he returns to the senate. Mark Antony's group are walking towards the Senate when Stilicho sees Titus and attacks him. Titus kills Stilicho and a fight breaks out. Lucius is wounded. Mark Antony returns to camp and Caesar parades him in front of the troops as a justified reason to invade Rome beyond Caesar being declared an enemy of Rome. Caesar and his men cross the Rubicon into Italy.

During the events of Rome: Season 1 Episode 3 An Owl in the Thornbrush played by Kevin McKidd

Caesar orders Lucius to take Titus and a group of Ubiians to Rome to post a proclamation on the Senate door. At their campfire, Lucius asks Titus how to get Niobe to love him and Titus gives him advice. Lucius, Titus and the Ubiians come across a group of Pompey's outriders. Titus ignores their orders not to attack and he and the Ubiians charge the camp, quickly defeating Pompey's men who appear to be young and inexperienced. As Lucius, Titus and the Ubiians get closer to Rome they come across Appius and his men disguised as drovers. Appius tells Lucius, Pompey Magnus and his men have fled Rome. Titus asks Appius how much he wants for Eirene and Appius tells him she is not for sale. A battle breaks out when Lucius notices they are wearing soldiers' sandals. Appius escapes, but the rest of his men are killed. Titus asks Lucius if they can go back and search the cart and free Eirene, however Lucius refuses. Lucius arrives in Rome and posts Caesar's declaration on the door of the Senate and then tells Titus he is deserting the Army and going home. He preys at an alter that his wife may love him, while elsewhere Niobe prays at another alter. Lucius tells Niobe she is beautiful and then promises he will try to treat her better.

During the events of Rome: Season 1 Episode 4 Stealing from Saturn played by Kevin McKidd

Lucius pays Drusilla to have her cook a dinner for a party he is having to celebrate the opening of his grocery shop. Lucius and his family then pray to a ceramic bust of Jupiter. Cato the Dwarf walks in and tells Lucius, Mark Antony wants to see him. Lucius goes to see Mark Antony who is being cleaned by a slave. Mark Antony makes Lucius an offer to rejoin the 13th Legion with a promotion, but Lucius refuses his offer. At the dinner party, Erastes Fulmen is the first guest to arrive at Lucius' party. Niobe introduces him to Lucius and Erastes introduces his wife Phyllis to them. The next to arrive are Niobe's sister Lyde and Evander Pulchio. Erastes has a conversation with Lucius about current events and offers any help he can give to Lucius. Vorena the Elder brings young Lucius to the table and Evander holds and plays with him which makes Lyde feel uncomfortable and she leaves the table. Lyde gets drunk and starts dancing with a random man and Clarissa tells Niobe she needs to get her home before she causes a scene. Lyde starts screaming that Lucius is a fool and then falls into the table holding the Jupiter bust, causing the bust to fall to the ground and break. Niobe cleans up after the party and Lucius tells her Lyde and Evander can no longer come to their house. Quintus Pompey, Volpe and the Syrians arrive at Lucius' home and demand to know where the gold is. Lucius denies knowing where the gold is and Niobe is about to be cut when Titus Pullo arrives on a litter with Eirene and walks into Lucius' courtyard. Quintus draws his sword and Titus distracts the Syrians by throwing coins into the air. Volpe and the Syrians are killed and Quintus is tied up. Titus wants to go back, take the gold and sail away, but Lucius orders him to return it and bring Quintus to Caesar.

During the events of Rome: Season 1 Episode 5 The Ram has Touched the Wall played by Kevin McKidd

Lucius tells Vorena the Elder he is going to sell his Gaulish slaves so he can pay her dowry and she can marry Crito and move with him and his family. Niobe thinks it is too soon, but Lucius thinks Vorena the Elder must marry at some point. Lucius and Titus go the bar that Titus left Eirene the night before and Lucius pays the African Barkeep the remainder of Titus' tab. They decide that Eirene shall stay with Lucius as a slave while Titus is away at war. Niobe does not want Eirene to move in with them, but Lucius is insistent. He goes to the slave market and Otho tells him all but one of his slaves have died of dysentery. Lucius brings the remaining slave home and the slave is given the name of Rubio by Vorena the Elder. Lucius approaches Erastes Fulmen about securing a loan, but Erastes refuses him, instead offering him a job as Erastes' personal bodyguard. Lucius accepts and follows Erastes to a business meeting, during which Erastes chastises one of his men for whistling too much. At the meeting, Erastes tells Lucius to break the arm of Tanjit, which Lucius does. When Tanjit refuses to give Erastes the money he wants, Erastes orders Lucius to kill Tanjit, which he refuses to do. Lucius returns home and Niobe asks what they will do for money. Lucius decides to rejoin the army and goes to Mark Antony's camp. While waiting outside he chastises a Whistling Legionary who was whistling a similar tune to the one Erastes' man was whistling. Mark Antony accepts Lucius back into the army with a promotion to evocatus, but for one thousand less denarii a month than what he previously offered Lucius. Lucius returns home and tells Niobe he has rejoined the Army and then is inducted into the Evocaty by an Elderly Priest.

During the events of Rome: Season 1 Episode 6 Egeria played by Kevin McKidd

Lucius suggests to Niobe that they take a trip, but she tells him that she can't leave Lyde, who is worried about her missing husband Evander, alone. Lucius gets drunk and tells Titus about his problems with Niobe, but refuses to leave her. A few days later Lucius goes home and finds Niobe dressed up nicely and wearing makeup. He breaks bread with her and then they have sex. When Milo makes an offer to Mark Antony to betray Caesar and surrender, Mark Antony doesn't immediately reject the offer, which upsets Lucius. That night he tells Niobe about the offer and that Mark Antony doesn't plan on helping Caesar and she tells him that at least they can be together. After Mark Antony makes his decision to mobilize the 13th Legion, Cato the Dwarf goes to Lucius' home and tells him of the news. Lucius tells his family goodbye once again and leaves for Greece.

During the events of Rome: Season 1 Episode 7 Pharsalus played by Kevin McKidd

Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo crawl onto the beach of a deserted island after their ship is destroyed. Lucius takes the time to carve a final note on a rock with his sword while Titus believes fate will save them once again. Lucius notices a body floating in the ocean and then he and Titus Pullo build a raft from the remains of dead soldiers and pieces of wood. They take the raft out into the ocean and eventually arrive on the shores of Greece where they are found by Pompey Magnus and his people. At camp during the night Lysandros approaches Lucius and Titus and makes them an offer to kill Pompey and take his family as slaves. Lucius angrily tells Lysandros to run away and when he does not, he stabs him through the throat. Pompey approaches them and asks why Lysandros was killed and Lucius tells him that he and his family are his and Titus' captives. Pompey pulls Lucius aside and begs him to allow him and his family to go free. In the morning Lucius and Titus take a horse and then leave Pompey and his family. They make it to Caesar's camp and Caesar is enraged when he finds out that Lucius allowed Pompey to go free.

During the events of Rome: Season 1 Episode 8 Caesarion played by Kevin McKidd

Caesar sends Lucius Vorenus to find Cleopatra and Lucius leaves with Titus Pullo. They hide outside of Alexandria and wait for a hint of where Cleopatra may be found. Lucius sees Nubian Soldier and two others ride past them and he and Titus Pullo follow them. Cleopatra is about to be killed by Nubian Soldier when Lucius and Titus kills him and the other two men. Later that night, Charmian tells Lucius to follow her and then tells her to have sex with Cleopatra. Lucius refuses and then sends in Titus to do the deed. Lucius and Titus eventually sneak Cleopatra and Charmian into Alexandria and into Caesar's camp.

During the events of Rome: Season 1 Episode 9 Utica played by Kevin McKidd

Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo return to Rome and Lucius is greeted by Vorena the Elder and Vorena the Younger and kissed and hugged by Niobe. She leads him into their house and tells him that she runs a butcher shop with Lyde. Niobe eventually convinces Lucius to join her at the butcher shop. One day he spots Terrified Man being assaulted by Pertinax and Urbo. Lucius intervenes and after Pertinax and Urbo insult him and Niobe, Lucius slaps Urbo in the face. Urbo leaves after telling Lucius and Titus that both of them are dead. Niobe tells Lucius that Urbo and Pertinax work for Erastes Fulmen and Erastes has grown in power and influence and can kill anyone he wants. Erastes shows up to Lucius' home and tells him that only he can correct his men and tells him that Lucius must either kiss his feet during the next market day or he will kill him after forcing him to watch the rape and murder of his family. The following day, Lucius, Titus and Niobe prepare for the arrival of Erastes, but are surprised when Lictor declares the arrival of Caesar to their home. Caesar invites Lucius to become the Magistrate of Lower Aventine and after he assures Lucius that he will restore Rome as a Republic, Lucius accepts.
