Caesar is holding a meeting with Mark Antony, Cicero and Posca present where he is outlining his future projects. Lucius arrives and Caesar decides to make him one of the new Senators in order to please the public who have found Lucius' actions in the arena to be heroic. An exasperated Cicero protests to Caesar that not only has he allowed Gauls and Celts into the Senate but he has now made a plebeian a Senator. In the Senate, Cicero, [[Cimber]], [[Casca]], [[Cassius]], and Brutus are critically pointing out the new Senators created by Caesar. Mark Antony holds a meeting with Cicero in which he threatens Cicero if he does not give a speech to the senate offering the governorship of Gaul to Mark Antony.  Cicero and Tyro leave Rome after Cicero leaves a message for the senate to be said by a [[Clerk Rome S2E3|Clerk]].  Cicero has Tyro write a letter to Octavian accepting his help against Mark Antony.

Cicero congratulates Octavian on his victory over Mark Antony, while giving excuses for not holding a Triumph for Octavian including Rome having to send [[Lepidus]] to wipe out the remnants of Mark Antony's army. He finally tells Octavian that the people would not like it, especially with Octavian's troops camped outside of Rome, which [[Gaius Maecenas]] agrees with. Octavian then requests to be Consul and Cicero agrees to speak with the other Senators but only if he agrees to follow Cicero's advice.  On the Senate floor, Octavian gives a speech calling for Brutus and Cassius to be called murderers and enemies of Rome, which shocks Cicero.  Cicero then has Tyro take a letter to Brutus and Cassius calling them heroes of the Republic and asking them to march to Rome with their armies.  Cicero visits with Octavian and demands that Octavian give up command of his legions and tells him that Brutus and Cassius are on their way back to Rome with twenty legions. He then threatens that any war with Brutus would be short and Octavian would lose, before smirking and walking out

[[Confidential Agent]] tells Cicero that Octavian and Mark Antony have joined forces. Tyro tells Cicero that armed men are at the door and Cicero hands a hastily written letter telling Brutus about Octavian and Mark Antony's plan to [[Messenger Rome S2E6|Messenger]]. [[Titus Pullo]] approaches Cicero and Tyro threatens Titus with a rusty sword and Cicero tells him to put the sword away. Cicero tells Tyro that he will be freed in his will and Titus kills Cicero.

Background

Marcus Tullius Cicero is a Roman senator.


During the events of Rome: Season 1 Episode 1 The Stolen Eagle played by David Bamber

Porcius Cato, Marcus Tullius Cicero and Scipio are watching the parade of people being thrown items from the wagons full of war spoils. Scipio complains of the sound the common people make when they are excited and Cato warns it will be worse once Caesar returns. During a senate meeting the Curial Magistrate calls on Cato to speak. Cato accuses Caesar of wanting to rule Rome as a tyrant by buying favor from the people and some senators. Cato calls for Caesar to be called back from Gaul immediately so he can face charges including the charge of treason. Pompey Magnus stands up and defends Caesar and refuses to have a vote on Cato's proposal. Cicero stands and tells the crowd both Cato is wrong for bringing a powerful Caesar back to Rome and Pompey is wrong for not seeing the danger of Caesar. Pompey ends the meeting by telling the senate he will not betray his friend.

During the events of Rome: Season 1 Episode 2 How Titus Pullo Brought Down the Republic played by David Bamber

At Atia of the Julii's home Pompey Magnus, Cicero and Cato meet with Mark Antony. Mark Antony tells Pompey, Caesar wants to make a compromise. He will return if he is given a province to protect him from prosecution, and the senators reject his offer. Pompey tells the other senators he thinks Caesar is bluffing and he isn't as confident as he seems. Pompey and Cicero have a meeting where Pompey tells Cicero he needs his support for a proposal that will be given tomorrow in the Senate by Scipio.

During the events of Rome: Season 1 Episode 3 An Owl in the Thornbrush played by David Bamber

A Legionary that escaped the attack by Lucius and Titus reports to Pompey and Cato that Caesar's men are now only 30 miles from Rome. Pompey decides to leave Rome in order to regroup as he realizes he cannot fight Caesar with the troops he currently has. Cato, Marcus Cicero and Scipio argue with Pompey, however he reassures them he knows what he is doing. The Senate then leaves Rome.

During the events of Rome: Season 1 Episode 4 Stealing from Saturn played by David Bamber

Cato, Scipio and Cicero continue to complain to Pompey about their situation when Quintus Pompey tells Pompey, Durio is dead and a group of Caesar's scouts recovered the gold. The senators think Caesar has the gold, but Pompey knows he does not. Pompey orders Quintus to go to Rome and recover the gold. When Quintus returns with an offer from Caesar for a truce, Scipio and Cicero want to consider the offer, however Cato and Pompey refuse.

During the events of Rome: Season 1 Episode 5 The Ram has Touched the Wall played by David Bamber

Cicero tells Brutus he is thinking of deserting Pompey and he invites Brutus to join him, but Brutus refuses.

During the events of Rome: Season 1 Episode 7 Pharsalus played by David Bamber

In Pompey's dinner tent, Cato, Cicero and Scipio discuss how they will reward their supporters with portions of the Roman republic. After Pompey's army is defeated at the battle of Pharsalus, Cicero and Brutus tell Cato and Scipio that they intend to surrender to Caesar. Cicero and Brutus ride to Caesar's camp and tell a Legionary that they are there to surrender. Caesar welcomes them warmly and brings them into his dinner tent.

During the events of Rome: Season 1 Episode 8 Caesarion played by David Bamber

As Caesar continues to stay in Egypt, Cicero has a meeting on the senate ground with Brutus. Cicero tries to get Brutus to join him in possibly betraying Caesar and Mark Antony and rejoining with Cato and Scipio. Brutus resists and shortly after Mark Antony walks into the room. Mark Antony grabs Cicero's hands and tells him that if he hears of anymore betrayal by Cicero, then he will cut Cicero's hands off and have them nailed to the senate doors.

During the events of Rome: Season 1 Episode 10 Triumph played by David Bamber

Within the Senate grounds, Cicero tells Brutus that after the vote to make Caesar emperor of Rome, he plans on moving into the countryside. Once the session begins, the Curial Magistrate calls on Cicero who puts forth the motion to make Caesar emperor of Rome for ten years. After anti-Caesar has been published, Cicero approaches Brutus and asks him why he didn't ask him for help, believing it is Brutus who wrote the propaganda due to it having his name as the one who wrote it.
