Coral Labusse
Background
Coral Labusse is a Quadroon living in New Orleans. Her mother is Celeste Labusse.
During the events of Quadroon (1971) played by Kathy McKee
Celeste hires Caleb Wycliffe to teach Coral how to read and write in English. Coral tells Caleb that there is little point in learning how to read and write as her fate is just to be traded to a rich Creole man based on her looks. Caleb returns to teach again and Coral tells him her friends are at a party celebrating one of them getting engaged yesterday at the Quadroon Ball. He tells her if he had any money he would set her free and she kisses him. After Caleb leaves, Celeste tells Coral that she will never be white enough for Caleb. She goes to stay with her friend Camille whose Creole master, Felix Ledeux, was killed in a duel with Antoine. Caleb goes to Celeste's house and she tells him to leave and that he won't be teaching her anymore. She goes to the Quadroon Ball and is traded by her mother to Cesare Dupree. Dupree starts to force himself onto Coral when Caleb confronts him. Dupree challenges Caleb to a duel and when he leaves, Coral tells Caleb to run away back north. She goes to Aunt Nancy's house after Caleb wins the duel against Dupree and then she and Caleb have sex. Afterwards she tells him they cannot see each other anymore. Caleb tells Coral that they can escape to Jamaica and he will pick her up at her house tomorrow. Coral and Celeste are arrested by the authorities when Dupree tips off the police that Celeste and Coral where never freed slaves. Coral and Celeste are then brought to prison to be auctioned off. She is bought by Dupree and brought to his house. He tries to make her willingly kiss him, but she refuses and spits at him. Dupree then has John Henri and Thomas lock Coral in the spring house. Later, Celeste comes to her and has her exchange clothes with her and tells her where to meet with Caleb. She leaves the spring house and bluffs her way past Dupree. Coral meets up with Caleb and then they and Jacques wait until Antoine arrives. Antoine tells them that the boat taking them away won't leave until tomorrow and that Celeste has been murdered. Dupree then arrives with John Henri and Thomas and forces Caleb to duel with him once more. Coral then watches as Caleb is shot and killed and then she is taken away by Dupree.
