Background

Caleb Wycliffe is from Boston. He taught school for a year. His aunt is Aunt Nancy and his cousin is Suzanne.

During the events of Quadroon (1971) played by Tim Kincaid

Caleb goes to New Orleans to visit Aunt Nancy and Suzanne. While traveling he sees a group of men walking and then witnesses Jacques being forced to fight another slave. After the fight, Caleb tries to purchase Jacques, but Cesare Dupree refuses to sell him, instead offering to play a game of cards either for Jacques or all of Caleb's money. Caleb loses and then goes to Aunt Nancy's house. Antoine tells Caleb about the many rumors surrounding Dupree including the murdering of slaves. He then tells Caleb about the tradition of Creole men taking Quadroon mistresses and of the Quadroon Ball. Antoine later takes Caleb to Celeste Labusse's house so he can teach Coral Labusse and her friends how to read and write English. Caleb is teaching them when Coral argues that she has no need to learn how to read or write. After teaching, Caleb tells Antoine about Coral and Antoine tells him Jacques is to be sold. Caleb convinces Aunt Nancy to purchase Jacques and they buy him at the slave auction. He and Antoine then go to a fencing school and Caleb is introduced to Mereaux and Felix Ledeux. Caleb is visiting with Coral when she tells him that her friends are celebrating one of them getting engaged the night before at the Quadroon Ball. He tells her that if he had the money he would buy her and free her and she kisses him. Caleb and Antoine go to the Quadroon Ball and Caleb watches as Antoine kills Felix during a duel. He has a conversation with Suzanne where he tells her he fells sorry for Camille, Felix's mistress, but Suzanne calls Camille a whore and tells him her friend Annette was Felix's Creole wife. He goes to teach Coral and is told by Celeste that she is at Camille's house. He goes to Camille's house and finds her dead from suicide and Coral tells him she will not be going to any of his classes anymore. He confronts Dupree at the Quadroon Ball when he sees him forcing himself onto Coral and Dupree challenges him to a duel. He faces Dupree at the duel and wins by only being wounded in the arm, while shooting into the air instead of at Dupree. He celebrates and goes home and Jacques tells him he has a visitor. Caleb goes into his room and finds Coral waiting there and they have sex. He asks her to leave with him and they make plans to leave the next day to Jamaica. He is then attacked by John Henri and Thomas, but he and Jacques manage to fight them off. When he goes to get Coral, he finds her and Celeste being arrested by the authorities. Dupree then tells him that he tipped off the police to the fact that Celeste and Coral were never freed slaves. Caleb goes to the prison and Celeste tells him that if he buys her at the auction, then she will help him free Coral. He and Antoine buy Celeste and then they make plans to escape. Caleb waits for Coral and they take a small boat with Jacques. Antoine arrives and tells them the ship won't leave until tomorrow and Celeste has been murdered. Dupree arrives and forces Caleb to duel with him once more. Caleb is then shot in the chest and dies.
