Balkan gives a lecture on Demons and Medieval Litterature and afterwards shows [[Dean Corso]] his library and hires him to authenticate his copy of The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows by Aristide Torchia, which he recently bought from [[Andrew Telfer]]. He receives a call from Dean telling him [[Bernie]], who was hiding Balkan's copy of The Nine Gates for Dean was murdered and that he wants to quit, but Balkan convinces him to continue. He calls Dean for another update and finds out that [[Victor Fargas]]' copy of The Nine Gate has different engravings, with some signed by Torchia and the other signed by LCF, Lucifer. He then murders Fargas when Fargas refuses to sell his copy and removes the engravings from his book. Dean informs him that [[Baroness Kessler]] refused to let him study her copy when she found out he was working for Balkan and Balkan tells him to try again. Balkan then murders the Baroness and steals the engravings from her book. He contacts Dean and asks him to return his copy of the book and is told that [[Liana Telfer]] stole his copy. He goes to Liana's chateau and takes back his book after choking her to death in front of her followers. He goes to the castle depicted in one of the engravings, and with the nine engravings signed by Lucifer, begins the ritual of The Ninth Gate. Dean interrupts him and he pushes Dean into a crack in the wooden floor and continues the ritual. After seemingly being immune to fire, he suddenly begins to burn to death until he is shot dead by Dean. | |||
