Detailed Synopsis

November, 1847, Sophia Cracroft and Lady Jane Franklin wait outside a meeting hall when Lady Jane Franklin tells Sophia that she is comforted to know that John Franklin is with Francis Crozier. She then tells her they should start making a list of those who might help them. They have a meeting with the leaders of the Discovery Service, consisting of Sir John Barrow, Sir John Ross and Sir James Ross, among others. Sir Barrow tells them, no one has seen either ship recently. He tells them they have nothing to worry about and Lady Jane Franklin reminds him that John Franklin wasn't their first or even third choice for expedition leader. She asks that a search party be sent out and Sir John Ross agrees. Sir James Ross tells Lady Jane Franklin that if no one has heard from the expedition by 1850, then he will search for them himself.

William Strong gets a haircut for his birthday while the other men sing He's a Jolly Good Fellow. Henry Goodsir looks at the photo he took of Franklin at the hunting blind and of the wounds of Lt. Graham Gore and Sgt. Daniel Bryant. Francis Crozier is sitting in his cabin when Thomas Jopson tells him Lt. Edward Little asked if he wants to postpone the officer's meeting. Jopson tells him, Little is worried about the state of the effects of the ice on the ships and Lt. John Irving will report about finding out some of the canned food has spoiled. They hear gunshots and Crozier runs to the deck of the Terror. He asks Thomas Armitage what is going on and Armitage tells him about the Tuunbaq attack on Pvt. William Heather. Crozier looks down and sees Heather missing the top of his skull, but still alive. Crozier orders Heather be brought below decks and Armitage orders Private Hammond to take watch. Crozier tells Little the Tuunbaq has made it onto the ship and Robert Golding reports that the Tuunbaq has dragged Strong away. Jopson wonders if the Tuunbaq wants them to follow it and Thomas Evans offers to help search for Strong with Crozier. Multiple search parties are sent out and Evans is also killed by the Tuunbaq.

Crozier returns to the ship and the sun sets for the last time of the year. Crozier tells James Fitzjames, the Tuunbaq laid a trap and Fitzjames notices how much Crozier is drinking. Crozier then admits he only joined the mission in order to use it as leverage when asking Sophia to marry him once more. Dr. Stanley examines Heather and tells Dr. MacDonald, Heather's health is not failing. Goodsir stays to watch and learn as MacDonald works on Heather. Sgt. Solomon Tozer complains about how the royal marines are taking the brunt of the Tuunbaq attacks, and Cornelius Hickey eavesdrops on Tozer's complaints. Corporal Hedges, Private Daly, Hickey, Wilson, Samuel Crispe and Walker are called for watch duty by John Lane. While on duty, Hickey finds Strong's body resting on the edge of the ship and sees the Tuunbaq walking away. He asks Tozer where Lady Silence has her camp. Dr. MacDonald tells Crozier that the body Hickey found actually consisted of the top half of Strong and the lower half of Evans. Fitzjames thinks a man did it, but Dr. MacDonald tells him it was an animal claw. Little tells them the only tracks they found belonged to the Tuunbaq.

Crozier remembers back to when he asked Sophia to marry him, but she refuses to due the nature of his job. As they are taking, Lady Jane Franklin interrupts them and tells Crozier, he will never marry Sophia. Irving tells Little that Hickey along with other crew members are missing. Hickey returns with Lady Silence and a fight breaks out when Golding wants to murder her, while Thomas Hartnell wants her to be questioned. Crozier walks into the deck and fires his gun into the air and orders everyone on their knees. He demands to know who is responsible for bringing Lady Silence on board and Hickey takes the blame, as do Hartnell and Magnus Manson. Lady Silence is transferred to the Erebus while the three perpetrators are questioned by Crozier and Fitzjames. Crozier orders that they each receive 12 lashes by Johnson. Hickey continues to argue that what he did saved the others and Crozier angrily has him punished as a boy. Hickey is lashed in front of the crew with his pants down. John Morfin tells Dr. Stanley that he is suffering from headaches. Fitzjames tells Dr. Stanley that Lady Silence will be staying on the Erebus and Dr. Stanley has Goodsir take over care of Lady Silence. Before releasing Morfin, Goodsir notices his gums have turned black. Hickey goes to his bunk and finds someone gave him some tobacco. Irving tells Crozier that all but ten men want to move ships to the Erebus and Crozier takes a drink. Goodsir finds Charles Des Voeux guarding Lady Silence's room and then brings her dinner and tries to communicate with her.
