Background

Criminal is a bank robber. He died in a train crash while he was being transported to prison. After murdering the child who would become Ghost Child, Criminal hid the gold he stole into the stovepipe of Gretta and Maylene's parents' home.

During the events of Are You Afraid of the Dark?: Season 2 Episode 7 The Tale of the Frozen Ghost

Gretta and Maylene tell Daphne about an old feud between their father and their uncle Charlie that was caused by their uncle Charlie hiring Criminal to work on the farm. Their father knew there was something odd about the Criminal, but Uncle Charlie wouldn't listen. Eventually the police came and arrested the Criminal and put him on a train. During the night Charles has a nightmare about the Criminal telling someone hiding in a tree stump to give him something back and then pulling away a red jacket.
