Quintus is ordered to defeat a group of Macedonian pirates by [[Tiberius Caesar]].  He takes control of his command galley and meets [[Ben-Hur]] who he refers to as 41, his rowing placement.  During the battle against the pirates, Quintus is knocked overboard by a pirate, but is saved by Ben-Hur who also prevents Quintus from committing suicide.  They are rescued by a Roman ship and Quintus is told that they have won the battle against the pirates.  Quintus is given a parade and a victory baton by Tiberius Caesar and Ben-Hur is given to him as a slave.  Quintus eventually makes Ben-Hur his son and gives him the ring of his ancestors.
