Both of his parents died in a boating accident and he was taken in by Dominic. Saint John and his brother, Stringfellow Hawke, were on a mission in Vietnam when Saint John was left behind. His grandfather collected famous artwork for his grandmother. Saint John was once in a relationship with Ellie in Vietnam and he was good friends with Mace Taggart. His medals include a Purple Heart, Bronze Star with an oak leaf cluster and a Distinguished Flying Cross.

Hawke and Mace Taggart have flashbacks to the time they were in Vietnam that involved Saint John.
